I did a talk over the weekend at a mens group at a local church. We were talking about money and retirement and somone made the comment that retirement is when you have enough money to really start living. What he meant was when you have enough money to do what you want to do with your time. If you could do anything you wanted with your time everyday without worrying about money, would you be doing what you are doing now? I net a guy named Garrett Gunderson a few weeks ago and I have been contemplating an idea he is working on. It is an idea where we find what we really have passion about and do that until we die instead of doing whatever we are doing now that we don’t feel passionate about until we really start living meaning retirement. He named this idea Soul Purpose. Now it is not s-o-l-e it is soul s-o-u-l purpose. This idea comes from his new book, Killing Sacred Cows. The book won’t be released until next week but I have a copy and I am working my way through it. This thought process goes on to explain that money has no value. That money is just the medium we use to transfer the good we provide for other human values. What you put your soul into, creates value and we are compensated for the value we create by injecting the human value we put into whatever we do. The more value, the more money. And of course the other way around. So when you are considering the model of the turtle in managing your money, why not consider how much more enjoyable and profitable it could be if you were doing your Soul Purpose everyday too instead of waiting to Really start living.

What a great show we had this week. I don’t know if it was the fact that it was finally sunny and I rode the HOG to the show or if it was because we had a great guest. I think it was a combination of both.
Our guest this week is Marcola Nixon of Solid Ground in Seattle. Solid ground is a non-profit group that assists over 33,000 people a year in the Puget Sound area. For more information on Solid Ground go to www.solid-ground.org.
Marcola helps people who are having problems with their mortgage. She helps them to understand the situation they are in and how to help them to make that situation better. She says that there isn’t always a perfect solution but if there is one, she will help people find it. She is an advocate for people in trouble. If you live in the Puget Sound area you can call her for help at (206) 694-6766 or you can reach her by email her at Marcolan@solid-ground.org
Listen to the show and you will get a sense of some of the reasons people to get into trouble financially and how it can be fixed. If you are getting a little behind each month or if you care about someone who is, you should listen to this show or pass the link along…

In a small town a few years back, the boys in the town would gather outside the local store after school. There was one boy named Johnny who would hang out at the store like the other boys, but the store owner noticed that Johnny was always the one that the other boys picked on. The other boys would say that Johnny was a half a bubble off the plumb or that he was a couple of bricks shy of a full load. To prove their point, they would offer Johnny the choice between a nickel or a dime. Johnny would always take the nickel because it was bigger. The boys would laugh at him and tease him some more. One day after Johnny took the nickel the store owner took him aside and said, Johnny, those boys are making fun of you. They think you don’t know that a dime is worth more than a nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it is bigger or what?Slowly, Johnny turned to the store owner with a big grin and said. “Well, if I took the dime they would stop doin it, and so far I have saved $20.00.See you at the top Johnny.

This week Howard discussed the difference between a scarcity mentality and an abundant mentality. We don’t see people with an abundant mentality that can’t make their car payment. There are some very simple ways to make the change from scarcity to abundance and we explain some simple changes you can make in the words you use when you talk to yourself to create abundance and prosperity in your life. If you want to reach Howard, you can email him at howard@themoneything.com

Those who are in the ultra world already know about the legendary Cliff Young but those outside may not have heard the story.
Every year, Australia hosts an 875-kilometer endurance racing from Sydney to Melbourne - considered to be the world’s longest and toughest ultra-marathons. It’s a long, tough race run by world-class athletes who train specially for the event. These athletes are usually under 30 years old and are backed by big names in sports like Nike. They have the most expensive sponsored training outfits and shoes. Every professional athlete knew for certain that it took about 6 days to finish this race, and that in order to compete, you would need to run 18 hours and sleep 6 hours
In 1983, these top class runners were in for a surprise. On the day of the race, a guy named Cliff Young showed up. At first, no one cared about him since everybody thought he was there to watch the event. After all, he was 61 years old, showed up in overalls and galoshes over his work boots.
As Cliff walked up to the table to take his number, it became obvious to everybody he was going to run. He was going to join a group of 150 world-class athletes and run! During that time, these runners don’t even know another surprising fact - his only trainer was his 81-year-old mother.
Everybody thought that it was a crazy publicity stunt which made the press curious, so as he took his number 64 and moved into the pack of runners in their special, expensive racing outfits, the camera focused on him and reporters started to ask:
“Who are you and what are you doing?”
“I’m Cliff Young. I’m from a large ranch where we run sheep outside of Melbourne.”
They said, “You’re really going to run in this race?”
“Yeah,” Cliff nodded.
“Got any backers?”
“No.”
“Then you can’t run.”
“Yeah I can.” Cliff said. “See, I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses or four wheel drives, and the whole time I was growing up– until about four years ago when we finally made some money and got a four wheeler– whenever the storms would roll in, I’d have to go out and round up the sheep. We had 2,000 head, and we have 2,000 acres. Sometimes I would have to run those sheep for two or three days. It took a long time, but I’d catch them. I believe I can run this race; it’s only two more days. Five days. I’ve run sheep for three.”
When the marathon started, the pros left Cliff behind in his galoshes. The crowds smiled because he didn’t even run correctly. Instead of running, he appeared to run leisurely, shuffling like an amateur.
Now, the 61-year-old potato farmer from Beech Forest with no teeth had started the ultra-tough race with world-class athletes. All over Australia, people who watched the live telecast kept on praying that someone would stop this crazy old man from running because everyone believed he’ll die even before even getting halfway across Sydney.
Turtle vs rabbits
Remember I told you that the professionals knew that you had to run 18 hours and sleep 6 hours to win. The thing is, old Cliff Young did not know that!
When the morning news of the race was aired, people were in for another big surprise. Cliff was still in the race and had jogged all night without sleeping. Athough he was still far behind the world-class athletes, he kept on running. When he got to a town called Albury he was asked about his strategy for the rest of the race. He said he would run through to the finish, and he did.
He kept running. Every night he got just a little bit closer to the leading pack. By the last night, he passed all of the world-class athletes while they slept. On the final day of the race Cliff was so far out in front that they couldn’t catch him.
So not only did 61 year old, Cliff Young win the race, he set a new record, breaking the old record by 9 hours. Of course he became a national hero! The nation fell in love with the 61-year-old potato farmer who came out of nowhere to defeat the world’s best long distance runners.
He finished the 875-kilometre race in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. Not knowing that he was supposed to sleep during the race, he said when running throughout the race, he imagined that he was chasing sheep and trying to outrun a storm.
When Cliff was awarded the first prize of $10,000, he said he did not know there was a prize and insisted that he had not entered for the money. He said, “There’re five other runners still out there doing it tougher than me,” and he gave them $2,000 each. He did not keep a single cent for himself. That act endeared him to all of Australia. Cliff was a humble, average man, who undertook an extraordinary feat and became a national sensation.
Current Race
The “Young-shuffle” has been adopted by ultra-marathon runners because it is considered more aerodynamic and expends less energy. At least 3 winners of the Sydney to Melbourne race have been known to use the ‘Young-shuffle’ to win the race.
Now, for Sydney to Melbourne race, almost nobody sleeps. To win that race, you have to run like Cliff Young did, you have to run all night as well as all day.
